Tourist taxi drivers of Meghalaya and Assam today convened an emergency meeting here to clear doubts and worries regarding the incident of July 26 where Assam-registered tourist taxis were forced away from a tourist site in Meghalaya by a pressure group.
The action by the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) that day led to fears that Assam taxis would be barred from operating in Meghalaya and that could lead to tit for tat restrictions for Meghalaya cabbies in Assam.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Robin Dutta, president of the Greater Guwahati Tourist Taxi Association, and Tiplang Nongbet, president of Hynñiewtrep Tourist Taxi Association, said that there is no such restriction passed by the state government and action was taken by the authorities against the HNYF after the July 26 incident.
However, both sides were vocal in their opposition to private vehicles being allegedly used as unofficial taxis to take tourists around the state.
