The West Jaiñtia Hills unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) alleged today that Assam continues to encroach on the area around Mukroh, which was the site of a massacre of civilians in November.
The KSU met with the district Deputy Commissioner on the issue today.
In the Mukroh Massacre, Assam police shot dead five Meghalaya villagers and one Assam forest guard over a dispute. The Assam officials crossed into Meghalaya, beyond their jurisdiction, over an alleged case of timber smuggling.
The pressure group today claimed that the Assam government has not respected the talks between the two states after the November incident but has instead sped up the construction of an illegal forest office at Mukroh by expanding office walls, roads, etc and, in the process, also destroyed the way to the paddy fields of the residents there by digging holes and felling huge trees.
The KSU said that the DC told its delegation that he has learned of the situation and assured that he will meet the DC and police officials of Karbi Anglong on January 27 to discuss the matter.
