An attempt by Assam to lay claim to land in Chatibui, Garo Hills, was opposed by the A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) today, the pressure group said in a press release.
According to AHAM, officials and police from Assam tried to evict residents of Meghalaya, claiming that they were illegal occupants.
The Assam officials stated that the land in question belonged to one Akash Ali from Mancachar but AHAM, the release said, stood in their way.
According to the group, the residents and shopkeepers on the site had proof of paying land taxes to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and they demanded that Assam show documents in support of Ali’s claim.
