The Social Organisations of Meghalaya Against Land Alienation (SOMALA) has urged the State government to ask its counterpart in Assam to respect the status quo between the two neighbouring states.
Reacting to encroachment reports in Khanapara with regards to construction of a transit camp, SOMALA convener W. Anthony said the boundary issue between Meghalaya and Assam is pending and both states are to maintain status quo.
“It is surprising that the government of Assam allows a transit camp to be constructed in the Raid Marwet within Mylliem Syiemship a constituent of Federation of Khasi States,” he said, adding that pending settlement of the boundary, no construction activity could be taken up within the Syiemship.
It may be mentioned that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has objected to the construction of the transit camp and accused Assam of encroachment in Khanapara. The district council said that the ongoing construction is illegal.
