Tired and unimpressed by the other political parties out there, ex-MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit announced the creation of a new party today, the ‘Voice of the People Party’ (VPP).
Basaiawmoit, who has previously been with the HSPDP and UDP, has been in the political wilderness since losing the 2018 state elections, though that has not stopped him attempting to launch grassroots movements since.
The VPP will be formally launched in November and the former Nongkrem legislator said that it will strive hard to bring in clean and good governance, strong and decisive leadership, peace and security, all-round and inclusive development and unity.
Basaiawmoit is the president of the nascent party, with other leaders comprising academics Kara H Shen, Ricky AJ Syngkon and Batskhem Marboh.
“Our fight for the 2023 polls will not depend on how much money we have to fight against the moneybag politicians but it will be on the issues and ideologies we will take to the people of the state,” Basaiawmoit said, adding that the need of the hour is ideological and issue-based politics.
He pointed to the rise of unemployment, lawlessness, and never-ending scams at present.
Syngkon, an assistant professor at NEHU, said that it deeply pains him to see the youth without a future.
“I don’t see any future for the younger generation despite a small state like Meghalaya being one that could have easily managed to be a role model for the country,” he said. “The existing political parties are giving no hope at all for the future and the only way to address this is a change that can meet the aspiration of the people and VPP will bring about all-round transformation.”
