Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said along with the development of the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured unprecedented peace in the region.
Shah, who arrived here on a two-day visit, attended a function marking the relocation of Assam Rifles establishments from Aizawl to a designated camp at Zokhawsang, about 15 km east of the state capital.
Speaking on the occasion, Shah said, “The Modi government has been making massive efforts to strengthen, develop and unite the entire Northeast over the past 10 years.”
“The Modi government has been working relentlessly for the Northeast to establish new dimensions of development in every sector—from tourism to technology, sports to space, agriculture to entrepreneurship,” Shah said.
The Home Minister said, “Before Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, the Northeast had been visited by former PMs only 21 times. After Modi became the PM, he has visited the region 78 times.”
“Along with development in every sector, Modi has ensured unprecedented peace in the Northeast,” he added.
Citing the relocation of the Assam Rifles bases to Zokhawsang, Shah said, “This is a milestone for the development of Mizoram as well as a symbol of the Centre’s responsibility towards the Mizo people.”
He explained that the demand for relocating the paramilitary force’s bases from Aizawl to Zokhawsang had been raised for around 35 years due to the topography and congestion in Aizawl.
“The demand, which has been there for around 35 years, is now set to be fulfilled due to the important decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is not just an administrative decision, but a testament to the Centre’s responsibility towards the Mizo people. This is the commitment of the central government for the development of Mizoram,” Shah said.
Since 1890, when the first Assam Rifles base was established in the state, Shah said, “This will be known as the most significant decision for the progress of Aizawl.”
Shah also announced that a Rs 2,500 crore road project on NH-502 A (Package 1 & 3) in Mizoram will soon begin.
He added, “NH-6 between Aizawl and Kolasib, which is the primary lifeline of the state linking Assam, will be widened to four lanes at a cost of Rs 1,742 crore.”
“The Centre has provided Rs 5,000 crore to Mizoram for road projects in the past 10 years,” he added.
The Home Minister also assured the people of Mizoram that the BJP-led central government is committed to a developed and peaceful Mizoram.
