The Department of Philosophy at St Anthony’s College, Shillong, organised an inter-college debate competition on the theme ‘AI Devalues Human Life’ here today.
Eight colleges – St Mary’s, St Edmund’s, Umshyrpi, Raid Laban, Lady Keane, BBS, Synod and hosts St Anthony’s – participated in the event.
Retired Indian ambassador Rudi Warjri was invited to be the speaker of the debate. The panel of judges comprised Prasenjit Biswas and P Hangsing of NEHU and East Khasi Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner Ronnieson Wahlang.
Lady Keane College, represented by Inamesha Syiem, who spoke against the motion, and Tulsi Payeng, who defended the motion, emerged as the winners of the competition. The runners-up title was bagged by Raid Laban College, represented by Mewal Janai Nongpluh, who spoke for the motion, and Diya Sinha, refuting the motion.
In addition to team awards, individual honours were also bestowed. The titles of ‘The Most Humorous Speaker’ and ‘Best Individual Speaker’ were both bagged by Inamesha.
The event was also marked by the release of Sapientia’ – a quarterly departmental bulletin and the first of its kind for the Philosophy Department. It is aimed at providing a platform for students to showcase their philosophical insights and creativity.
