Tura MP Agatha Sangma will look into the supposed anomalies regarding the erstwhile Khasi states’ joining with India through the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement of 1948.
Federation of Khasi States adviser and spokesperson, John F Kharshiing, met with Sangma in New Delhi and presented her with a memorandum on the matter.
During the meeting, Kharshiing stated that, in the excitement of achieving independence, the constitutional issues relating to the 25 Khasi states were overlooked.
He also requested the MP to study these issues on behalf of the Federation of Khasi States and to urge for the attention of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, so as to “resolve the numerous legislative conflicts happening on the ground on multiple issues”.
Implementation of the treaty would restore the Assembly of Khasi States, which was inaugurated in April 1949 by the Governor of undivided Assam.
“This Assembly was unique as it comprised the 25 chiefs of the 25 Khasi states, 56 elected representatives and eight nominated members (four men and four women),” Kharshiing added.
