The National People’s Party (NPP) has begun the process of constituting its election committee, which will finalise the names of candidates for the upcoming state election.
NPP Meghalaya president WR Kharlukhi, who is also the state’s Rajya Sabha MP, said that the process to set up the committee will be completed within a week
“Once the it is created, the process of calling for applications will start and we have begun the process of constituting the election committee as per the direction of our national president Conrad K Sangma,” he said.
Informing that the NPP intends to field candidates in all 60 seats, he claimed that there will be no dearth of party aspirants as the number of people who have recently joined the party shows that it has gained in acceptance.
The NPP finished second to the Congress Party in the 2018 election but was able to cobble together a coalition and, thanks to by-election wins and the Congress’ meltdown, it is now the largest party in the Assembly, though still short of an absolute majority.
Kharlukhi said that the NPP will not form a pre-poll alliance but he added that it is too early to talk of post-election coalitions.
