Nongpoh, Oct 17: The Ri-Bhoi police’s ongoing vehicle inspections along National Highway 6 have reportedly led to a significant decline in road accidents.
These checks target drunk driving, illegal modifications and traffic violations. Public awareness has improved, with fewer motorists daring to break rules once police presence is noticed.
On the night of October 16, under the leadership of Superintendent of Police VS Rathore and Additional SP Orville Massar, police teams and Village Defence Parties (VDPs) from Quinine, conducted joint inspections. Fines amounting to Rs 5 lakh were imposed across the district for various violations, including drunk driving and use of hazardous LED lights.
Rathore expressed appreciation for the VDP’s cooperation and stressed the importance of strengthening community policing. He noted that public concern over evening checks reflects growing responsibility among drivers. He also commended frontline police personnel working tirelessly on the roads.
The VDPs of Quinine expressed satisfaction with the police initiative, stating that many tragic accidents are caused by reckless and drunk driving. They vowed to continue supporting efforts to ensure safer roads and peaceful communities.
Rathore also appealed to the public to actively share constructive suggestions through social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to help improve police services in the district.
He encouraged citizens to offer meaningful feedback that promotes community welfare, stressing that police value public cooperation in making Ri-Bhoi and Meghalaya safer and free from crime. Rathore assured that efforts will go beyond traffic checks, extending to the elimination of criminal activities so that people from children to elders can live without fear.
