Shillong, Jul 28: A residential building located in New Kenchs Trace locality is on the verge of collapse after a truck damaged its retaining wall when it fell into an under construction drain on Sunday.
While the truck was towed hours after the accident, it left cracks on the retaining wall of the house.
Heavy rain further triggered a landslide at around 2 this morning. No damage was reported to the houses and surrounding areas, except for a small portion of the road being covered with rubble.
In response to the incident, authorities from various departments have taken swift action to prevent further untoward incidents and ensure public safety.
The incident highlights the need for caution and preparedness during heavy rainfall, particularly in areas with ongoing construction and infrastructure development.
It is learnt that the building is owned by the wife of former Meghalaya Minister Atul C Marak.
MLA of South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai, along with local authorities, inspected the site.
Speaking to reporters, Shullai stated that he had spoken to PWD (Road) authorities for immediate construction of the wall, through the Contingency Fund.
He also said that authorities from Jio Telecom Company and BSNL have been asked to deinstall cables from the tower erected on rooftop, to ensure safety in the area and to remove it. He said the rubble was covered with plastics to prevent rainwater seepage.
