Two people were left injured after the speeding vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the Umsning Bypass on National Highway 6 in Ri-Bhoi on Sunday.
The incident at around 4:30pm involved a Maruti Ignis (ML05 W 7020) that overturned at Umkaliar on the bypass, injuring the driver and one of the passengers. Two others in the vehicle fled the scene following the accident. The four are thought to be friends.
Due to overspeeding, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn on the highway. Umsning police and a 108 ambulance attended the scene, with the two injured individuals taken to Umsning Community Health Centre for medical treatment.
The current condition of traffic on NH-6 continues to raise concern among commuters, particularly on weekends, due to reckless driving by youths on two-wheelers or cars. These groups often treat the highway as a venue for racing or performing stunts at high speeds, without any consideration for the safety of other road users.
