The State government has been directed to hold meetings with various Christian denominations to find solutions to the difficulties in burying the dead in cemeteries.
A division bench of Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh of the Meghalaya High Court on Thursday was informed about the progress made of the meeting held with the District Magistrates and members of the community to resolve the problem faced by the Christian community.
Additional Advocate General, K. Khan and the Amicus Curiae N. Syngkon told the court that some progress has been made and sought time to file reports.
The court granted the State and the committee time till the next hearing, scheduled on July 3, 2025, to hold meetings with the various denominations of the Christian community and to file a joint report or separate reports by July 1, 2025, with a copy be sent to the Advocate-on Record for the petitioner.
In its last order, the court had directed that the three District Councils—Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council and Garo Hills Autonomous District Council—are to be made party respondents.
“Due to inadvertence, the earlier order was not forwarded to the Registrar General and appears not to have been sent to the three councils. The Court Master attached to this Court is directed to immediately send the relevant orders to the Registrar General for service on the Councils,” the court directed.
