Dr. Marco Mitri, professor of NEHU, while lauding the parents and teachers who have produced students who did well in their various examinations, said the teachers should also examine if we can be on the merit list if we are examined by the people setting questions from Delhi.

Stating that the number of jobless graduates is not only a state issue but the entire country, he said it has been stated that between 2023 and 2033, there will be around 70 million graduates youth in India who will be seeking jobs.

“I urged the students who have received this excellency award who have sharper eyes and brilliant intelligence to use your wisdom to cultivate the resources available in our state, to not allow outsiders to tap all our resources, and to bring hope again to the crisis we are facing,” he added.

The professor also observed that this national crisis of jobless youth will intensify by 2030 onwards and the flow of outsiders will be numerous who will try to come and take advantage of the resources available here.

He said in his years of research and collaboration with my other professor friends from Europe, they are astonished at the kind of wealth the Khasi-Jaintia region is blessed with, but we lack exposure, unlike other tribes that know how to present themselves to the rest of the world.

General Secretary KSU Donald Thabah lamented the lack of officers from the region at the UPSC level.

He also pointed out the hardships when officers from other states come to manage the administration of the state because they don’t understand the local sentiments, which becomes even harder in rural areas because they don’t know the native language.

He also expressed concern about the dropout rate in the state after the primary level and blamed it on the lack of proper counseling and guidance on the importance of education.

He also emphasized one of the challenges the state still faces, which is teenage pregnancy, and the need to contain this problem.
