Voters in the four Assembly seats won by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) are regretting their choice, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, the National People’s Party (NPP) MDC for Sohryngkham-Mawryngkneng, said today.
Syiem, who leads the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) as Chief Executive Member, said this when asked whether there will be a wave of support for the VPP against the established parties.
Justifying his claim, he said that the four VPP legislators are not providing enough assistance to nor responding to the concerns of the electorate in their constituencies.
“The VPP supporters are now regretting their decision after seeing the VPP work on the ground, which is reaching nowhere, and the result of this will be seen in the district council election,” Syiem stated.
Meanwhile, he added that he is undecided about whether he will contest the next KHADC election from the Nongthymmai seat, from where he has received offers to run.
Syiem also justified the extension of the current KHADC, whose term will now run to 12 months past its expiry date after twice being extended for six-month periods by the state government in order for the redrawing of constituency boundaries to take place.
On the statement made by the VPP president, Nongkrem MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit, that the present MDCs are like expired medicines, he said shot back, “I just wanted to tell the president of the VPP to not act like a clown in the circus, entertaining the people, creating anarchy and chaos with no positive results and fruits.”
He added that the VPP only knows how to infuse hatred and communalism among the people and has done nothing for the benefit of the masses.
