Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla today handed over the ex-gratia payment to the family of the victims buried by landslide at their house in Nongpriang village under Sohra Civil Sub Division.
Shylla was accompanied by Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem and officials. He assured the family members of the government’s support and assistance.
“The purpose of our visit is to show our sympathy and extend our condolences to the family members,” he said.
The minister stressed that the state is vulnerable to many disasters and urged people to be alert and to be prepared. “As the community is the first responder to any emergency, hence you should be well-prepared till the government agencies arrive though it takes time to reach a disaster site especially in far-flung villages.”
He lauded the residents of Nongpriang for the support and said such cooperation should also come from other villages as well.
Shylla said he will visit other cyclone affected villages and assistance will be provided as per norms.
Four persons including three from the same family were buried alive by landslide at the village on May 30.
With no road connectivity, rescue teams from Sohra who included police, fire service personnel and SDRF reached the village after an arduous trek down the flight of stairs for around two hours.
The victims are Kynmaw Synnai (70), his wife Benti Riahtam (60), and son Lumlang Riahtam (16) and Phisar Nongrum (75).
