Three children died after consuming poisonous mushrooms in Saphai village, West Jaiñtia Hills district while nine others have taken ill.
The children had fallen sick after consuming the toxic fungi on May 28. They were rushed to the Ialong Civil Hospital, Jowai the next day.
They were all then brought to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) yesterday where one was declared brought dead.
The deceased were identified as Riwansaka Suchiang (8), Kitlang Duchiang (12), and Wansalan Suchiang (15).
According to a report from NEIGRIHMS, the victims were admitted in Medicine & Paediatric ICUs.
Another 14 year old minor girl has been admitted to Paediatric ICU. “…very sick with kidneys and liver failure on ionotropic support not yet on ventilator,” a bulletin from the hospital stated.
Meanwhile, two other patients, husband and wife, has been admitted in Medicine ICU.
The wife around 30 years of age is critical and is on ventilator with “Hepatic & Renal failure” and is on ionotropic support.
“Husband is also sick but better than wife with liver and kidney failure. He is on ionotropic drugs and not yet on ventilator,” the hospital bulletin stated.
