Children from West Garo Hills, Dibrugarh and Kokrajhar marked Earth Day today through outreach programmes organised by biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak.
Twenty students attended the outreach event held in WGH, which was organised by Aaranyak and British Asian Trust with Darwin Initiative (Biodiversity Challenge Funds) support.
In Dibrugarh, 27 students participated in a drawing contest on various aspects of nature and harmful effects of single use plastic and how it can be reduced to protect the environment. Students were also engaged in discussions about plastic waste and coexistence between humans and elephants.
West Garo Hills and Dibrugarh are both affected by the burgeoning conflict between human beings and wild elephants and multifaceted approaches have been adopted by Aaranyak to mitigate the conflict.
Another programme was held at Kakojan Habi LP School, near the Dehing Patkai National Park. This was also organised through the British Asian Trust in collaboration with the national park authorities with support from Darwin Initiative (Biodiversity Challenge Funds).
Elsewhere, the Aaranyak team organised another outreach programme for students in Kachugaon Division of the Raimona National Park’s central range. The programme was organised in collaboration with the park authorities and Wildlife Trust of India.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainability in the world. A special celebration was held this year to commemorate the day with the theme ‘Planet vs Plastic’.
