Sugar smuggling to Bangladesh from Meghalaya has cost the State infrastructure when a vital bridge linking West Garo Hills to South Garo Hills collapsed today morning after two trucks heavily loaded with sugar tried to cross it simultaneously.
The 60-meter iron bridge over Bagla river near the Dimapara area is located near Dalu on National Highway 217.
Despite the restrictions of heavy vehicles, two 18-wheeler trucks laden with sugar attempted to cross the bridge, causing its collapse under their weight.
Bags of sugar were left scattered everywhere, with many falling into the Bagla river below.
The trucks bearing registration number AS-01-MC-4307 and AS-01-FC-6875 reportedly belonged to one Akrirul Islam Faraji.
It was further suspected that the sugar consignment was heading towards Bangladesh from Assam.
It may be mentioned that smuggling of sugar to Bangladesh is going on unabated from Assam through Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, social activist Greneth Sangma stated an FIR would be filed against truck owners.
