Meghalaya Police sub-inspector Amit Sinha was killed in a road accident today at Gurugram in Haryana.
The accident occurred between 3:30 am and 3:50 am at the Golf Course Road, when an unidentified over speeding car rammed the Mercedes Benz (HR 26 DG 3865) he was in, police said.
The cop’s friend, a lawyer named Digvijay Singh who was driving the car, sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to the Sanar International hospital, located nearby. The accused fled from the spot after the accident, police said.
The lawyer in the FIR said that after the car hit the Mercedes from behind, his car lost balance and hit the divider due to which the duo got badly injured.
“Passersby pulled us out of the car and rushed us to a hospital for treatment where doctors declared my friend Amit Sinha dead during his treatment,” he said in his complaint.
Following the complaint, a case has been registered against an unknown car driver under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC at Sector 53 police station.
Sinha, who was attached with the office of the Superintendent of Police, Ri Bhoi district in Meghalaya, was on official visit to Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Chandigarh.
Sinha had previously served as the in-charge of Khapmara PIC and Byrnihat Police Outpost before his transfer to the Crime Branch of Ri Bhoi Police.
It may be mentioned that he was accused of having a nexus with the coal traders and even possesses luxurious vehicles.
The officer was said to have not register a FIR filed by the Ri Bhoi Youth Organisation (RBYO) against 93 illegal coal-laden trucks in 2019.
In 2021, the Meghalaya Humana Rights Commission (MHRC) had also directed the Director General of Police to institute an enquiry into allegations against Sinha for snatching a phone of a citizen, Kronding Nongbsap for filming overloaded trucks plying over the then weakened Dwar Ksuid Bridge.
In November last year, allegations were also made that the two luxurious vehicles with fake registration plates seized by the police belonged to the cop.
These were seized when Meghalaya police busted a thriving fuel theft and adulteration racket along national Highway 6 in Ri Bhoi district. However, the State police never provided any details on the seizure of these vehicles and their ownership.
