Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD, Prestone Tynsong today informed that work orders for packages – 1, 2, and 4 of the Shillong-Dawki road project have been issued and the work is set to resume shortly.
Speaking to media persons after a meeting, Tynsong informed that the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has already started the work under Package 1 (Umshyrpi to Mylliem).
“However, for Package 2 the final work order has been issued and machinery has been brought in. We expect the work to commence very soon,” Tynsong said.
Regarding Package 4, Tynsong said that the final work order has been issued but some additional official documents are required to be finalised between the construction company and the NHIDCL.
It may be mentioned that the Shillong-Dawki road project was funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at an estimated cost of Rs 1377.5 crore.
The road project which involves construction of a four-lane road from Umshyrpi to Umtyngngar and two-lane road from Umtyngngar to Dawki was supposed to be completed in December 2022.
However, the work has failed to start due to many reasons. Even the Meghalaya High Court has pulled up the NHAI and the State government for the failure to complete the work.
