The Umkiang dorbar shnong has warned of launching an agitation if the state government and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) fail to immediately repair the national highway 6.
The bustling highway, which also connects Assam, Manipur and Tripura have long been marred by the deplorable condition of the road that has not only become an eyesore but also a constant hazard for vehicles and pedestrians alike.
Several petitions and protests against the atrocious conditions of the road were submitted by different dorbars and groups, that even the Meghalaya High Court is miffed by the delay to carry out repair.
In a statement today, the Umkiang dorbar said its residents will not be able to celebrate the festive season with ease as most part of the road has turned into puddles during the rainy season and dust from the road blows during dry weather.
Waheh shnong Lasting Pala said the road is causing numerous problems to residents, including children who have now having health problems due to dust.
According to the dorbar, a company named Laxmi from Silchar had carried out little and unsatisfactory repair work but had stopped because bills were not paid.
The dorbar said people have suffered way too long and if the authorities continue to remain inconsiderate villagers will have no other option but to launch a major public agitation.
