On the heels of a road traffic accident that claimed the life of a female pedestrian, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also holds the Home Department portfolio, has assured that more traffic police will be deployed in Mawlai Mawdatbaki.
The promise was given to a delegation from the local dorbar shnong, which met Tynsong today.
The incident on November 13 saw a two-wheeler ridden at high speed, according to police, by a minor collide with a 40-year-old woman, resulting in the latter’s death.
Although this case rightly shocked the public, the representatives of the dorbar shnong told Tynsong that the area in and around Mawlai Mawdatbaki witnesses numerous accidents, mainly minor, involving two-wheelers and other vehicles.
Many of the two-wheelers are ridden by minors, the dorbar shnong claimed and their recklessness puts the lives of people in danger. It called for immediate action on the part of the law enforcement to crack a whip against unruly teenagers.
A day following the incident, police were seen to be checking the licences of motorists in the city but the dorbar shnong told Tynsong that it had previously approached the Public Works Department and traffic police over the need to curb rash driving but no positive measures were taken to prevent untoward incidents like that which led to the loss of life on Monday.
The dorbar wants speed breakers and rumble strips where necessary and more traffic police personnel at road junctions, as well as to create dedicated pedestrian crossings.
