The Labour Department will now be known as Department of Labour, Employment and Skill Development.
The change of nomenclature was decided by the State cabinet today.
“The Labour Department is much broader than just simply looking at labour. It looks at other aspects of employment and many aspects of skill development and hence we found it appropriate that the department’s name as well as its activities should be broadened,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told media persons.
It may be mentioned that in the past the name of some departments have been changed by the government.
The Prisons Department was renamed as Department of Prisons and Correctional Services while the Sericulture Department was renamed as Textiles Department.
