The Khasi Hills unit of the Garo Students Union has called on the state government to facilitate the setting up of insurance offices in various pockets of the state to make it easier on vehicle owners to obtain insurance.
The GSU said that many two-wheel owners have been fined by police for not having valid insurance. More insurance offices located in communities would make it easier for vehicle owners in obtaining insurance, cutting down costs and time.
Having such offices in rural areas would also make it more convenient for insured drivers to claim insurance in case of accidents. The GSU said that many who have insurance are put off from filing claims for compensation because they have to travel from rural areas to urban centres for this.
The GSU also asked for insurance awareness campaigns, a streamlined online process for insurance and for the police to be more understanding and less aggressive when checking on vehicle owners’ insurance status.
