Illegal stone quarries operating in the plain belt area of West Garo Hills district have become a major concern for the Centre for Environment Protection and Rural Development (CEPARD).
CEPARD president, Samgar Sangma alleged that these illegal stone quarries are operating at Gumaijora, Bawilgre, Najokgre, Wadagokgre and in other areas of West Garo Hills.
“These illegal operations have been causing severe damage to our environment and posing a significant threat to the livelihoods of local communities,” he said in a press release today.
Sangma said as per their recent survey the illegal stone quarries are rampant in the area and are making a significant impact on the ecological balance of the region. “We are witnessing massive deforestation, depletion of groundwater, and soil erosion due to illegal and uncontrolled quarrying activities. Additionally, these activities have led to air and noise pollution, causing severe health issues for the local community,” he said.
CEPARD has urged authorities to act on such illegal acts and sought for an immediate inquiry and hold the operators accountable for their actions.
“We believe that sustainable development can only be achieved by preserving our environment. The government must enforce strict laws against those who violate it. We call for the implementation of fair and transparent policies that prioritize the interests of local communities and the environment,” he said.
