Congress legislator Ronnie V Lyngdoh has expressed concern over noise pollution caused by modified honking devices in vehicles.
Lyngdoh had raised a query on the provision of Motor Vehicle Act during the budget session today and urged the government to ban such vehicles, including army vehicles, from using such devices beyond the permissible decibel limit.
He highlighted that huge vehicles are plying 24X7 late night and their honks disturb people who reside near the highway. Army vehicles are also using such honking devices while some youth have turned the Upper Shillong road a “racing track,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar admitted that application of the rules is not up to the mark but assured that the government is doing its best to monitor violators.
Dhar said that the department has been receiving complaints and officers are on the field to check violators who are being penalised and honking devices seized.
According to him, 73 cases were registered during 2021-22.
