The Khasi Students Union (KSU), Narpuh Circle and the Sonapyrdi Tourism and Economic Development Society (STEDS) today lodged a complaint with the East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner seeking inquiry into the dead of fishes at Lukha River.
In their separate complaint, the organisations said many fish were found dead yesterday and this was due to pollution of the river cause by wanton dumping of chemical waste by cement plants in Lunar.
Lukha is the confluence of two rivers, Lunar and Lukha which originate from two opposite directions.
KSU circle president KS Suchiang has also sought answers from the district administration on how much the river has improved through the rejuvenation project after a micro algae plant was set up in Sonapyrdi.
STEDS said it has raised the issue of pollution since 2007 and no action has been initiated by the State government. “If such incidents continue to happen then the goal of the society to promote tourism in Lukha river will become meaningless,” secretary TL Gymphad said.
Notably, in July last year in pursuance of the National Green Tribunal order passed on April 28, 2022, the State government has constituted a joint committee of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPB) to look into the alleged release of effluents in Lukha River.
