Trinamool Congress (TMC) state leader Dr Mukul Sangma called on the voters of Meghalaya to elect representatives who will work for them instead of following their political masters in New Delhi.
Mukul, the leader of the opposition, said this today while campaigning for his party in Mahendraganj.
His statement was an attack on the National People’s Party (NPP), especially its supremo and Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma.
Mukul recalled that, when he demitted office as CM in 2018, “BJP leaders from Delhi came to Meghalaya and appointed a CM who was not even elected from any constituency back then. Only after becoming a CM, he became an MLA. This shows that we didn’t choose this state government, it was done by leaders from Delhi. It was not the mandate of the people of Meghalaya but an imposition.”
At the time of the 2018 election, Conrad was the Tura MP. He was then elected as Chief Minister, contested a by-election following the resignation of his sister Agatha Sangma as South Tura MLA and then entered the Assembly. Agatha then replaced her brother as MP.
Ironically, however, Mukul’s TMC is headquartered in West Bengal. However, the party has been at pains to make clear that the Meghalaya members will control the affairs of the state party unit.
On the allegations of corruption made against the state government, Mukul said that only the TMC would be able to rid Meghalaya of corruption. “Those whose greed knows no end filled their own pockets instead of working for the upliftment of the people. If today Meghalaya is the most corrupt state, it is not because of the people. It is because of those in power. This is why it becomes extremely important to use our right to vote in this election,” he said.
