Voice of the People (VPP) president Ardent M. Basaiawmoit has lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer against NPP Mawlai Block adviser Embhah Syiemlieh for making defamatory comments against him during the meeting held by the NPP at Mawlai Nongkwar yesterday.
“The comments, statements and remarks made, were recorded and uploaded in various social media platforms and YouTube channels of various news and private channels which were not related to election matters and cannot be deemed a political speech, however, were targeted against me personally and thereby created a displeasure and a censured opinion towards me and the ideology of the Voice of People Party (VPP),” Basaiawmoit said in the complaint.
“The statements were targeted and defamatory against me, thereby causing injury, harmed the reputation and made the supporters to belittle the party; overall the comments of introduction of certain legislations were surmised and conjectured just to create confusion in the minds of the people; my past work spheres are my personal arena and not of the Voice of the People Party or the party members and workers. This is clearly a personal vendetta and vengeance by the speaker/political leader against me which violates election norms and conducts and dissuades the public from their right to choose a candidate or a political party of their choice,” the VPP president added.
He also said that the statements and comments made by Syiemlieh may affect the electoral performance of the candidates representing the VPP in various constituencies for the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Election, 2023.
Basaiawmoit has urged the Chief Electoral Officer to take necessary measures and action against Syiemlieh in accordance with law.
