BJP candidate from East Shillong constituency Wankitbok Pohshna today said that people of the State are unhappy with the performance of the NPP-led government during the last five years.

Pohshna who is contesting against NPP candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “On February 27 we will change (the government) for the better future of our children.”

Slamming Lyngdoh for her failure to address the problems of the constituency despite her long innings as MLA, Pohshna said that East Shillong constituency still lacks basic civic amenities like water supply, streetlights, proper roads and drainage system.

“We pay water tax to the Shillong Municipal Board, but even after doing that we still have to buy water,” he said.

Pohshna also raised the issue of illegal construction of houses in the municipal quarters in the Goraline area.

“On one hand, the public have to take permission from Meghalaya Urban Development Authority to construct houses in their private lands but on the other hand in government property, houses are being constructed illegally,” he said.

He said that if elected he will improve the civic infrastructure and try to improve the safety and security of the citizens.

Stating that his other priority is to create employment for the unemployed youth of the constituency through central government schemes like the Prandhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, the BJP candidate said that through this central government scheme youth will be trained with various skills.

Expressing concern with the poor healthcare system, Pohshna said that the Urban Health Centre in the constituency still operates from a rented premise.

“If elected I will make sure that this health facility is fully operational and there should be 24×7 doctors,” Pohshna said.

He added that if elected the BJP will set up the Directorate of Prosecution to deal with drug related cases and setting up of government-run rehabilitation centres for drug addicts.

Pohshna also rejected allegations that the BJP was anti-Christian.
