The Centre has agreed to the demand of both Meghalaya and Assam for a CBI inquiry into the indiscriminate Assam Police firing at Mukroh village on November 22 which claimed six lives.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured that he will constitute an inquiry by the CBI and the order on the same would come out any time within this month.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, PHE Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and C&RD Minister Hamletson Dohling met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at New Delhi today.
Sangma apprised Shah about the incident on Assam-Meghalaya border and pressed for a CBI enquiry. A similar demand for a CBI probe into the incident was also made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday.
Sangma explained and gave details to the Union Home Minister on the circumstances that led to the incident and said that the entire firing by Assam Police was unprovoked and excessive use of power.
Pressing for a probe by a central agency into this entire incident so that the truth comes out, the Chief Minister also said that action should be taken against those responsible for this inhuman act.
The Chief Minister also shared with the Union Home Minister the root cause of the long pending border issue between Assam and Meghalaya, the different incidents that occurred along the border including the latest one at Mukroh.
“With the incident at Mukroh, the ongoing border talks with Assam have hit a hurdle and there are a lot of areas where trust has to be rebuilt and therefore the intervention of the Government of India is necessary to this end,” Sangma said.
He also took up the issue of safety and security of the people in the border area especially in sensitive and disputed zones and urged the Centre to initiate a process for both state governments to come together to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.
Sangma also stressed to the Union Home Minister for the support of the Central government to ensure that basic supply of essential commodities should not be disrupted and for cooperation of neighbouring states for the same.
Discussions also held on other matters like the demand for inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eight Schedule, implementation of ILP and to allow the State government to go ahead with the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).
