The State government has decided to freeze all assets of former Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Meghalaya police, Gabriel K. Iangrai in connection with the case lodged against him in the police vehicle scam.
The Home Secretary informed this to the Meghalaya High Court today during hearing of the PIL filed by former diplomat Riewad V. Warjri.
The Home Secretary in the report filed before the division bench of the High Court said that appropriate steps would be taken to ensure that the assets of the tainted police officer are frozen since the extent of the scam has been prima facie pegged at Rs 3 crore.
The Home Secretary also stated in the report about the various actions taken so far against Iangrai which included filing of a chargesheet.
Advocate General Amit Kumar told the High Court during today’s hearing that Iangrai has sought some documents and he has been given time to file his written statement in response to the chargesheet.
Kumar also stated that an inquiry officer has already been appointed and 43 witnesses have been mentioned in the chargesheet and the connected papers.
The court said it hoped that the inquiry is conducted “as expeditiously as possible without affording undue latitude to either the department or to the delinquent.”
“It is hoped that the entire matter is monitored at the highest level to ensure that the defalcated public funds are recovered and the culprit or culprits are brought to book,” the High Court said.
The court also dropped the contempt proceedings against the Home Secretary after he submitted the report as sought by the court today.
The next hearing on the matter will be held on November 25 to ascertain the progress made in both the departmental proceedings and in respect of the FIR lodged against Iangrai.
