Politics in Meghalaya has changed. With more politicians and no statesmen, the field is now seen as a lucrative area for businessmen to invest in it, rather than on trade.
These views were made by eminent academician and retired Professor of Political Science NEHU, LS Gassah.
“It is sad to see the change in the state when they make politic as a place of investment, and if we look the background of majority of our politicians they were businessmen” Gassah told Highland Post.
He said businessmen in the past invest in trade and commerce and think on how to earn and make profit. However, he lamented that the present generation of businessmen are seeing politics as a trade with no intention to serve the people of the State.
“Self-love has taken over love for the jaitbynriew and fighting for issues, addressing those issues affecting the people have only become matters to be raised at election planks,” he said.
Emphasising on the need for statesmen to carry the State forward Gassah said, “A statesman is a person who can sacrifice for his people, a person who puts the jaitbynriew before wealth and benefits.”
“Now where are all these statesmen? It is sad to say that in five years they have tried to earn for their five generations,” he rue.
He said people have to be more conscious, think for change and produce and bring statesmen because our State now has “Too many politicians and not enough statesmen”.
