East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh has backed action against obstructive hawkers in her constituency.
Speaking to Highland Post, Lyngdoh said, “My biggest challenge now would be to see that the street vendors are relocated immediately because walking from Laitumkhrah Police Point to Beat House has become a real headache because of the occupation of most of the footpaths by hawkers.”
Stating that even though she would never want to take away anybody’s livelihood, she feels that there needs to be a balance with the need for pedestrians to be able to walk freely.
Lyngdoh admitted that she could lose some popularity with such a stance but that action is needed as the issue has become a big problem.
Officials of the district administration, led by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo, yesterday inspected the footpaths occupied by hawkers in Laitumkhrah.
