The Khooid Ya Ka Wah Myntdu (KYM) organisation has urged the Public Health Engineering Department to ensure that the water treatment plant that supplies water to Jowai is cleaned regularly.
Representatives of the organisation witnessed the cleaning of the water treatment plant at Urkhla Khimusniang, Jowai.
KYM has also been trying to inspect various other water treatment plants in Jowai and found that they have been covered with soil. This appears to the KYM to indicate that they have not been cleaned for months.
“If we look at the water from the PHE, that which flows from the taps is clear and clean but once it is stored the water becomes red and when we boil it, it turns grey,” said KYM president Khroo L Pariat.
Pariat said that, nowadays, the water treatment plant has to be cleaned more than four times a year due to the accumulation of soil, a phenomenon that has been increasing with time. This has become a challenge for the PHE to supply water to the town.
