Concerned by the dangers posed by their easy access, the East Khasi Hills District Magistrate has banned the open display of knives, daos and other sharp objects by vendors in Police Bazaar and Jail Road.
The order by the District Magistrate refers to the risk that miscreants might pick up such implements and use them as weapons against shopkeepers, the general public, etc. “Sale of such objects may be done only inside the shops under closed display,” the order adds.
Locally made knives, daos, etc are openly sold in parts of town, either to locals or to tourists.
The banning order has been made under Section 144 of the CrPC and comes into force with immediate effect.
