The central government still appears keen on mining uranium in Meghalaya but the Khasi Students Union (KSU) will not waver in its opposition to any such design.
KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said that, through the state-owned Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL), the central government can attempt to break the will of the jaitbynriew but the pressure group will remain firm in its opposition to uranium mining.
The big question, according to him, is how many of Meghalaya’s 60 MLAs will come out categorically against uranium mining if the Centre tries to revive the idea.
“The Parliament, in a question hour session, talked about closing the chapter on uranium but the government of India is still not silent on the matter and are trying to move forward with uranium mining in our state,” Marngar said.
If uranium mining begins, the people living in the vicinity of these areas will be gravely affected and the whole state as well, he feared, adding that the people must never fall prey to riches that will prove to be a curse on the people.
