The Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) is set to install 40,000 smart meters in West Garo Hills district.
This was informed by officials at an awareness programme and live demonstration of smart meters held in Tura yesterday.
Officials said that installation will be done free of cost in the district during the first phase, which is expected to be completed by November-December. There will be no charges for five years, they said.
According to the Satnam Global Infraprojects Limited (SGIL) officials, the smart meters with in-built GPRS has the online bill payment facility through mobile app.
The officials also informed that so far 44,000 smart meters have been installed in Meghalaya.
