Concern over frequent accidents that lead to injury and loss of life has led to the Umroi Constituency People’s Forum (UCPF) to demand the construction of footpaths along the Shillong Bypass.
Hundreds of injuries and several deaths have been blamed on forcing pedestrians to walk at road level, say the UCPF and it has demanded that the National Highways Authority of India and state government act.
Today, UCPF members led by president Gil Warjri inspected parts of the bypass, especially those areas that have the most pedestrian traffic.
Speaking to the media, Warjri said that the road often has schoolchildren walking along it, which makes the UCPF fear for their safety.
