CUET: BJP foresees ‘big crisis’, calls for extension of registration

The State BJP has warned of a major crisis and breakdown of law and order in Meghalaya if class 12 -passed students cannot be accommodated in the exam centre when the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) begins.

BJP state president, Ernest Mawrie had flagged this issue in a letter to union education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan while seeking extension for CUET registration.

“There will be a big crisis in June-July, which is the time when the admission process is normally carried on in the colleges. There is even danger of serious breakdown of law and order. We request you to kindly extend the last date so as to enable as many students as possible to register for the same,” Mawrie said.

Informing the minister that NEHU is planning to implement CUET from the forthcoming academic session for all colleges affiliated to it, he said that since all the colleges in Meghalaya are affiliated to NEHU, the implications of this decision is that all the students who pass class 12 this year, in order to get admission in any college in Meghalaya should pass the CUET-UG.

“Many of the local students in the state are unaware of this new development. In fact, hardly anybody in the state is aware of this.  The situation that will arise is that no student in the whole state will be eligible for admission to BA, B.Com, BSc and other undergraduate courses. Most of them would not have applied for appearance for the test since the last date is April 30, 2022. Even if they manage to apply at the last moment, it would be difficult for them to give the examination since there is only one online exam centre in Shillong and none in any other town. The number of Class XII-passed students will be too high to be accommodated in the exam centre,” Mawrie said.

It may be mentioned that Meghalaya has only two centres to conduct the CUET. The National Testing Agency has notified only two centres – one Shillong and one in Ri Bhoi.
