Tit for tat condemnations have continued to emerge from the Garo Students Union’s Western Zone.
Last week, the general secretary of the zone issued a press release questioning the legality of certain claims to leadership within the pressure group.
Tengroang Marak said that the GSU’s North Daddenggre unit was dissolved after its president, Rupa Marak, contested the state elections in 2018 without resigning from his post. With it dissolved, he questioned how one Tengsan Marak could claim to be the president of the Western Zone (North) and call for an election to the Phulbari regional unit.
Today, Tengsan, Lucky A Sangma (the assistant secretary of the western zone) and several others, signed a release stating that all proper procedures had been followed in Tengsan’s election.
Several meetings of GSU members and units had been held in the run-up to the election, they said, adding that Tengroang’s claims are “false and baseless”. They also requested him to stop spreading “fake news”.
A meeting of several units under the western zone (North Dadenggre) was held to discuss the matter on Sunday.
