Section 144 CrPC has been promulgated in East Khasi Hills district prohibiting any person from using any destructive fishing practices along the stretch of the Umngot, Umlow and Umngi rivers.
The district magistrate in an order passed today said this was necessitated after information was received that some miscreants have been using explosives, fishing nets, poisonous chemicals and other destructive fishing practices along the stretch of the rivers through Kenbah (Syntein), Kenmynsaw (Syntein), Domskong (syntein) Mawrapat, Mawsawa Mawkasain, Kenbah Malai, Phlangwanbroi, Kynrang, Rangweng, Pyndensohsaw, Jyllep, Khiehriat, Pomblang, Laitumsaw, Dangar, Dangar Dop, Umsawrang, Photstein, Umlynter, Lalpani and Pynden Borsora.
“Such rampant killing of fish in the above rivers may result in endangerment of aquatic life and utilization of poisonous chemicals may have an adverse impact on the people living in the surrounding areas unless prevented,” the order said.
