The Meghalaya government is keen to promote sustainable economic development, especially in rural areas, to preserve the natural resources and beauty of the state.
This was stated today by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who inaugurated the new academic building of St Xavier’s College in Umoid, South West Khasi Hills. Also present were local MLA and cabinet minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Archbishop of Shillong Victor Lyngdoh, among others.
Sangma praised the efforts of the Jesuits and expressed hope that the institution will produce great men and women who will serve the community.
Speaking on the economy, the CM said that the government is investing in South West Khasi Hills’ tourist sites to make them more attractive to tourists and thereby provide economic avenues for the public.
He said that people are depending on exhaustible resources, which are not renewable, like minerals and forest products which have limitations. Therefore the government has been trying to promote a shift towards sustainable forms of economic development, like food processing and tourism. He informed that the government is aggressively working towards making trade with Bangladesh flourish.
