Unhappy with the recent joint inspection by the Meghalaya and Assam governments of the disputed border region in Hima Nongspung, the Raid Warmawsaw-Umsohbar has decided to hold its own border meeting on December 13.
The decision was taken today at a meeting of the raid. The local MLA, MDC, NGOs and traditional chiefs of Hima Nongkhlaw, Hima Nongspung and Hima Jirang will be invited to the border meeting at Bakhalapara, adviser to the raid, Manoson Doloi, told the media today.
“We are not satisfied with the recent physical verification, as the representative of the Meghalaya government, led by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, were controlled by the representatives of Assam and they were mum on the valid documentation that the Nongspung authorities have to justify Meghalaya’s possession of the land,” Doloi said.
Four of the five villages inspected by the delegations of the two states want to be part of Meghalaya. The four are Patgaon, Lungkhung, Hawla and Bakhlapara, Doloi said. The people of Jimbrigaon would rather belong to Assam but all five villages fall under Raid Warmawsaw-Umsohbar.
It would be a travesty if Meghalaya trades these four villages to Assam as part of the give-and-take that both sides might engage in, he added, and if this does come to pass, the people are ready to take the matter to court, Doloi added.
