World Food Day was observed in the College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences, Umiam yesterday.
On this occasion, high yield variety seeds of lentil were distributed to the farmers of Ri-Bhoi district for promoting cultivation of pulses under rice fallows.
A group discussion was organised among the Post Graduate and PhD students of the college under the theme “Our actions are our Future, Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment and Better Life”.
The students discussed the various means and ways of enhancing production, food nutrition in a sustainable manner to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
Certain key points that were highlighted in the discussion are: Diversification of crops with efficient localisation of resources, sustainable approaches in all possible levels of food production chain, Innovative food production and reclamation of wasteland, wise branding of nutrient enriched food products, adoption of available strategy to minimise food wastage at storage and post-harvest stages, area specific customised farming policies and infrastructural development to reduce bottleneck.
