Angered at the apparent apathy of the Public Works Department as the neglect shown by the start government to their plight, various residents of the town came out in large numbers to repair at least two roads within their area.
The roads which were touched upon today were in abject condition and pleas had been made to the PWD to take care of the situation. However, the department in question is yet to be moved into action.
“This road repair by us (residents) was undertaken today as the department seems unwilling to act on the situation despite knowing how bad the roads are. This apathy has gone for too long and we had no other choice than to do it ourselves,” said local resident, TG Momin.
Hundreds of volunteers, armed with various instruments began the task of road repair with many more joining through the day. The section between Soksan to Resu Bakra and from Dekachang to Jongla were touched upon as it was in the worst condition when compared with others in the district.
“The condition of the roads in Resubelpara and nearby shows the apathy of the incumbent government towards the people of Resubelpara and Mendipathar. The government and the department have turned a blind eye and deaf ear to our plight and that is why we have come in large numbers. Let this be an indicator to the dissent that the people feel,” said Rinaldo K Sangma, the local Congress MDC, who also took part in the road repair.
In order to complete the road repair, many residents of the town and nearby provided their vehicles as well as donations to provide raw materials for its completion.
NGH has been one of the worst affected regions in the state in terms of road infrastructure with almost all roads in various points of disrepair. Further the long awaited Damra to Bajengdoba road has also been delayed by the construction company that has been tasked with its completion.
“We hope those in authority realize what they are lacking. Every section of our state has equal right to development and this is something that should not be denied,” added Rinaldo.
