The Hynniewtrep Youths Council (HYC) has expressed its concern over the alleged illegal transportation of coal from Umrit to Umling in Ri-Bhoi, which has not only badly damaged roads but also proven hazardous to people who travel on them.
The HYC said that the coal transportation occurs even during daylight hours on the Umrit-Umling stretch.
The pressure group’s local unit has strongly condemned this as this road was not constructed to withstand the weight of heavy vehicles, which should use the national highway.
The HYC said it suspects that back roads are being used by truckers because the coal they carry is illegally sourced and they wish to avoid detection. It asked the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police to crack down and bring an end to ferrying of coal via this route.
