The employees’ union of Meghalaya Cherra Cements Ltd (MCCL) today wrote to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to plead for a resumption of production at the failing company.
The state-owned cement firm has been haemorrhaging money for years and the state government, itself not in the best financial position, has been looking to get a private firm to take MCCL off its hands. Workers have gone for months at a stretch without receiving their salaries; recently the state government did provide help so that some amount of the pending dues could be cleared.
“The financial assistant given by the government has eased the financial burden of the employees but not to the full extent,” union president Shanlang Diengdoh said.
He urged the CM to get the MCCL plant running again; however, that may be a vain hope as the company loses money on every bag of cement it makes.
