The State forest department dismantled an illegal saw mill in operation at Kalapani, Chibinang village under Phulbari PS in West Garo Hills district today.
The area of operation falls under the Hollaidanga Forest Range under WGH territorial division.
The operation was carried out following a tip off on the illegal operations. Sources said a joint team comprising the state forest and local policemen, began the raid early morning.
The team confiscated machineries used within the mill and dismantled the complete set up. Timber, that was present in the mill was also confiscated by the team.
The latest raid comes after notices have been sent by the department to various illegally operating saw mills and stone quarries. While many such illegal set ups have already complied with the order, many are yet to do so.
“We have confiscated the machines and the entire structure has been dismantled. We will continue to crack down on such illegal set ups and ensure they remain closed,” said DFO in charge for WGH, SWGH and SGH, Rupanker Marak.
